The Cinque Terre and the characteristics of the landscape

The Cinque Terre are that stretch of coastline on the Riviera Ligure di Levante located in the province of La Spezia between Punta Mesco and Punta di Montenero, in which time, human endeavor and the beauty of the landscape have meant that, today, it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is precisely between these two points that the ancient villages or terre, as they used to be called in ancient times, five in fact, arise, which, from west to east, outline the hills immersed in the enchanting Ligurian landscape: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Since 1997 these five villages have been protected as World Heritage Sites.
A characteristic feature of the landscape are the ciàn, a dense weave of terraces, of dry stone walls, which interrupt the steep slopes of the hills on which gardens, vineyards, stairways, cottages, and mule tracks rise and make these places enchanting and unique. It is the work of man, of high environmental engineering, that has transformed the hills and that the ciàn, today, protect the coast with more than 4,200 cubic meters of walls, about two meters high, that protect vegetable gardens and vineyards and that make the local production of wine and oil among the best in the world.
